Online communities

Get an online community to show up at the same time

A server with 5,000 members and 40 online is normal. Getting 200 of them in the same place at 8pm on Saturday is not. Crowd makes the number visible before anyone commits their evening.

The problem

Online communities are large and unreliable in exactly the wrong proportion. Reaction emojis on an announcement tell you nothing about turnout. Organisers either over-promise to the host or give up on big events entirely.

Why a threshold fixes it

  • One link pasted into an announcement channel. Members tap it; no bot to add, no role to assign.
  • Anonymous joins work across platforms, so a Reddit, Discord and Twitch community can share one count.
  • Deadlines up to 30 days out suit long lead-time events; a few hours suits a spontaneous raid.
  • The live counter travels with the link. Re-share it as the count climbs.

How to do it

  1. 1

Pick the time and the number the event needs to work. Be realistic about time zones.

  2. 2

Create the action with the time in a named time zone and a deadline a few hours before.

  3. 3

Post the link in announcements and pin it. Re-post the count as it climbs.

  4. 4

If it fills, the event's on. If not, nobody wasted a Saturday night.

Questions

Is there a Discord bot or API?
Not yet. Each action has a JSON endpoint that returns the current count, and a bot could poll it, but there's no official integration. The link alone works in any client.
Can members join from a phone?
Yes. The page is a normal website and works in any mobile browser, including the in-app browsers in Discord and Reddit.
What time zone does the page show?
The action page shows times in the visitor's own time zone. Put a named zone in the description anyway so nobody is confused before they open it.
Can I make a private action?
Actions are visible to anyone with the link and appear in the public browse list. If you need it out of the list, keep the description generic and share the link only inside the community.

One link. Anonymous. No accounts. If the number doesn't fill before the deadline, nothing happens and nobody is on the hook.
